Hey hey, I'm Brian Lovelace!

Before you ask: yes, Lovelace is my real last name. I'm pretty sure fate knew what it was doing when it handed that name to a wedding photographer.

Weekdays, you'll find me at Los Angeles City College in the Cinema & TV Department, making sure students and faculty have everything they need to bring their projects to life. Weekends belong to weddings, and I keep my calendar intentionally small so every couple gets my full attention.

How I got here

The camera guy, since yearbook

I've been "the camera guy" since high school, when I joined yearbook and shot every school event I could. College took some figuring out, but one thing kept pulling me back: cinema. I earned my cinema degree at Santa Barbara City College, then a bachelor's in cinema production at CSU Northridge, and went on to work in the film industry.

Along the way I started shooting weddings on weekends and fell in love with telling people's stories. More than ten years and 100+ weddings later, as lead and second shooter, it's still my favorite thing to do: making sure your day is captured to the fullest.

My approach

Your day, told like a story

Spending years around filmmakers rubs off on you. I think about light, framing and story the way a cinematographer does. My style is photojournalistic: candid moments of the two of you and the people you love, with gentle direction whenever you want it.

We always start slow. Before any session, we'll walk, talk and get to know each other, and I'll probably have you tell each other a joke or two. Whether you're camera-shy or love the spotlight, you'll forget I'm there pretty quickly.

A few things to know

Be prepared

I'm a former Boy Scout and the motto stuck. I show up early with backup cameras, lenses and flashes, a timeline we've worked out ahead of time, and a handful of trusted second shooters. The day runs smoothly and nothing gets missed.

A proud nerd about your photos

There's a stack of computers under my desk running everything from our media streaming to an iMessage server for my Android phone (yes, really). Your photos go into a system built to protect them: carefully organized, carefully edited and backed up in multiple places.

Dance floor magic

First dances are my favorite part of the day: the song you choose, the way you move together. Once the party starts, my light-trail dance floor shots blend flash with a little shutter drag, so every photo feels alive with movement.

Clients become friends

Most of my couples end up as friends. One bride even trusted me with her sister's wedding and her best friend's wedding after her own. Shy or spotlight-loving, if you love a good time, we'll get along great.

Off the clock

Road trips, roller coasters & game nights

When I'm not behind a camera, you'll usually find Steff and me out exploring, screaming our way through a roller coaster, or getting a little too competitive over a card game at home. A few favorites:

The Southwest loop

Our favorite drive is the Utah–Arizona loop through the Southwest's national parks and landmarks. The Pacific Northwest is next on the list.

On the trail

Mulholland to the Sierra

Close to home, we hike the trails off Mulholland near the top of Reseda. I've hiked the John Muir Trail twice, and while I'm not in JMT shape these days, the Sierra keeps calling.

Game & puzzle nights

Fights may break out

We'll play anything, but Monopoly Deal is the house favorite, and Monopoly Deal No Mercy comes out when we want a fight to break out. Quieter nights mean a puzzle on the table.

Steff just finished nursing school and is officially a registered nurse. I couldn't be prouder of her, so fair warning: I'll be bragging about it for a while.

The pups

Ollie & Penny

Ollie is our Parson Russell Terrier and resident goofball. He naps and people-watches from the window all day, but still loses his mind over a tennis ball.

We recently said goodbye to Penny, our Chihuahua-Pug. She was the warmest little dog and my afternoon "bad influence"; we fell asleep on the couch together more times than I can count. We miss her every day.
